Day of surgery
- Quiet, warm room
- Small meal that evening if pet is interested
- E-collar on at all times
- Pain medication as prescribed
Days 1-3
- Lethargy normal; should improve daily
- Short, leashed bathroom breaks only
- No baths, no swimming
- Suture line check twice daily
Days 4-10
- Continue rest and leash
- E-collar still on
- Slight swelling (seroma) common
- Daily medication continues per prescription
Days 10-14
- Suture removal appointment
- Gradual return to normal activity
- Final wound check
Watch for
- Sudden worsening lethargy
- Refusal to eat after day 2
- Vomiting persisting beyond day 1
- Pus, foul smell, opening of suture line
90% of post-surgical complications we see are from owners taking the e-collar off. Keep it on.
